"Milestones" - Concert Band
"Milestones" is a musical depiction of the rich history of Musikklaget Brage, a wind band based in Ålesund, Norway. Through the different movements, I have highlighted some important events in the ensembles history.
The composition opens with a brief yet majestic prelude, which then gives way to the mysterious introduction of the section titled "1907: Destination Christiania". This passage refers to the year the band was founded and the members’ bicycle journey to Christiania (now Oslo) to acquire their instruments.
A transition leads to "1934: March Towards Nordkapp", which features expressive solos for euphonium and tuba. In 1934, Musikklaget Brage is believed to have been the first marching band to perform a concert at North Cape. The march evolves into a waltz, incorporating brief quotations from the local Spjelkavik Song intertwined with original melodic material. An interlude follows, reintroducing the melody from the opening section in a transformed guise. This sets the stage for "1973-1990: The Golden Age". The chorale reminds us of the musical development that Musikklaget Brage went through during this period.
"Finalis: Futurum Vultus Serenum" (Latin for "the future shines") is the title of the final section of this composition. Previously introduced themes are revisited and interwoven, building toward a dramatic turning point. A vibrant and rhythmically driven theme gradually emerges and is ultimately played in unison by the full ensemble, culminating in a powerful conclusion.
"Milestones" was commissioned by Musikklaget Brage with support from the "Norwegian Composers´ Fund".
