"Variations on a Norwegian Hymn" - Brass Band
One of my most favorite Norwegian hymns "Eg veit i himmerik ei borg" served as a source of inspiration in composing "Variations on a Norwegian Hymn".
After a short prelude, the main theme of the hymn occurs for the first time written
for brass quintet and vibraphone. The theme transformes into a Danzón (Variation I), with solos for both Flugelhorn and Euphonium. After an interlude with unaccompanied cadenzas for Flugelhorn and Tenor Horn, the main theme appears as a fugue in a chanting style (Variation II). The start of the techno sound file, heralds the glorious and overwhelming grand finale.
"Variations on a Norwegian Hymn" was commissioned by Vestnes og Daugstad/Vike skulekorps (Norway), as own choice piece on the Norwegian School Band Championships 2019.
